Social Networking "On The Go!"

So for anyone that knows me at all, you will know that I should have enough frequent flyer miles saved up to never have to pay for another ticket until Bush is out of office. In other words, I travel, A LOT!

So this last week while on my way back from our Nation’s Capital, I just started thinking to myself of all the different airports, and planes I had been on, that I took the opportunity to start talking to a complete stranger, and then actually start talking business more than anything else.

I’m not sure if it’s the absolute best way to spend one’s time, by starting up a conversation with someone you know nothing about, that has an extremely small chance of having any interest in what you do whatsoever.

So I decided to ask myself a couple questions in regards to this subject:

- Is this topic, one of talking business to complete strangers, still considered “Social Networking”;
- Is it tacky to be willing to “sell” anywhere?;
- Can you actually factor in some level of “Social ROI” to each experience?

First question – to answer we need to understand what “Social Networking” really is. A Social Network is a social structure that are tied by one or more specific types of relations. So by definition I would say that talking to anyone, as long as it has some form of purpose behind it, regardless of where you are, what you are doing, or where you are going, is considered Social Networking.

Tacky to sell anywhere? Selling yourself, selling your product/business. Sounds like it could be very tacky, and I think this comes down to distinguishing oneself as either a succesful businessman or woman, who again brings some level of purpose behind the conversation (and no, the purpoes of just hearing yourself speak doesn’t count). You distinguish yourself, you lose the tacky for most in my opinion.

In regards to the Social ROI, I would say that if you get someone to even smile and awknowledge that you aren’t crazy, then you could consider it a positive return on an easy investment. Because regardless of this world being very big, with billions of people on it, when it comes to Social Networking, the world is a very small place indeed.

That ONE person that you could have a conversation with, while chewing on your rubbery chicken, and dried out rice pilaf, may not show interest now, or have interest directly. But what he/she does with the knowledge of that conversation, or with your business card once they return to their normal life, is anyone’s guess. Just take into account, that one day (sooner, later, makes no difference), you may get a phone call from that person you talked to or a complete stranger, that makes the reference to that conversation you had while you were flying coach and eating your biohazard poultry, could very well be your next biggest client. The possibilities are endless. Not talking from a religious aspect at all, but sometimes things just happen for a reason. And most things that happen can be traced back to some form of “Cause & Effect”. In this situation, beCAUSE you took the initiative to start that conversation, and promote Social Networking for yourself, you now see the Effect of being handed a brand new client, a brand new partner, or even just a new friend.

Good communication is as stimulating as black coffee, and just as hard to sleep after.

Reevaluation / Focus Change

Just two months ago I wrote about how I felt the most important thing for me to do was to find CH Consulting a VP of Sales and Marketing, in order to stop the see-saw sales effect.

Well sometime over the last two months, I had a corporate/entrepreneur epiphany. This epiphany had me take a hard look internally at the way we sell CH Consulting, as well as how we position our services to our potential clients. So these are the things that hit me the hardest:

· Still haven’t found a VP of Sales and Marketing;
· No one has been able to sell CH Consulting, as well as ME;
· That our main strength is our Telemarketing background.

So when you sum all of these up, the thing that had to happen was a strong reevaluation on how we do business, and a change in focus on what and how we sell ourselves.

So here I am in Mid-May, have taken the time to do just that and being satisfied with the initial results. No one can sell this company as well as I can, regardless of being a tad problematic at times in terms of juggling my billable time. But, during the reevaluation I have realized that it is just easier for me to find someone to be billable in my place, than to find someone that can sell in my place. So I have stepped into the position that I have wanted to fill for so long, with allowing me to still be the strategic driver of project plans.

Bottom line we have always had a great strength due to an extensive Telemarketing background, but when CH Consulting shed the Call Center part of the business, we also shed the desire to position Telemarketing Services as a main selling point to our business. But now, by going back to old clients, and talking to “new” clients – changing focus and showing our “true colors” toward Telemarketing in regards to positioning it as a main selling point we are starting to see almost overnight results.

So regardless of the “Norm” in what a small business should or should not do, there are always going to be those times where looking outside of the box, and taking a deep look internally to the soul of the business is an absolute must. And sometimes taking a look at the parts of your business that you would normally overlook due to what some would consider “common sense”, will give you a new outlook on your business future, as well as more cash in your flow.

Check out the Chamber

I hope this e-mail finds you enjoying the change of seasons as spring is upon us. We are well into what we believe to be a great year for CHC and our clients.

Today I want to share with you a personal opportunity that I have had the last few months....I was selected to participate in a MN Chamber Leadership program for Minnesota executives. We have done five 2-day sessions around the state, with industry leaders and elected officials to really study and analysis the economy of Minnesota- industry needs, regulations., workforce issues, taxes, incentives, global competition. We looked at health care, manufacturing, energy, agriculture, tourism, financial services...etc. We had access to top executives of some of Minnesota's largest employers and some amazing, steady on-going family businesses. It has been AMAZING!

Main points I have learned: 1) This is a GREAT state to be back as a resident of and business owner in and 2) it is only good for business in my opinion because we have an AMAZINGLY effective and knowledgeable state Chamber. It is SO important to have the business community heard in St. Paul and no organization could do better.

As a member, supporter and all around fan. I wanted to ask you to consider a MN Chamber membership if CH Consulting does not already have one. You can learn more about the Chamber and their Leadership Program at www.mnchamber.com or click here for an application brochure.

OK...so there is a small contest amongst the leaders for new members, so let me know if you are going to sign up....contest aside, I'm happy to share more on the Leadership experience and what else I have had access to with this group if you want to discuss it. I hope that you will consider a partnership with this important business advocacy group.

Best wishes for a happy spring!

Sales and Growth Challenges

I am wrapping up a week of sales activity, catching up on phone calls all with still dozens to return. Even we consultants find ourselves in the situations we warn and advise our small business clients of...the see-saw sales of the entrepreneur being the primary sales person. Up and down revenue and work load goes against my billable time.

I continue to feel the most important thing for CH Consulting is to find the right VP of Sales and Marketing. This will shift us from the current sales mode of capitalizing only on what we are being pursued to do, to an opportunity to pursue all of the untapped markets for our products and services we have so many plans for. To find the right person....

Yet another growing pain, like all the others we help our clients navigate as well.

Back from Vacation and Ready to Blog

Hello all,
It took a week's vacation (the first one in the last three years) for me to finally get on here and use the blog. I have been so busy with day-to-day life that I have not taken the time to reflect. Because I think that this blog provides an opportunity for me to share with you my thoughts, I would like to remind all of the workaholics that I know and have the pleasure of working with (you know who you are) to take the time to vacation. It does a body, mind and spirit good. I came back charged to do get back to work and do business with a new energy, a broader perspective, and a greater sense of balance. We all need a break

For the curious I was at the New Age Health Spa. A great spa and a wonderful experience.

some thoughts from me...

Like the other CHC Bloggers, I have never done this before. Although I am a qualified technical application and automation consultant, I am still known internally at times as responsible for more than a few "end user issues." I think it is a true testament to Web 2.0 that the interactivity of the internet has grown to such a degree that I can easily share my thoughts with you. I look forward to exploring the blogosphere from this side and am excited to see what responses you all may have.

I plan to cover any and all topics that we deal with in our day-to-day business lives. Whether it is a client related issue or internal situation, it seems more and more apparent to me that there are some simple truths that keep popping up and that we are presented with the same challenges again and again until we find ways to solve them. I would love to hear about the challenges that you are facing and I hope to get you thinking about new ways to work internally and externally by initiating good dialog on best practices and real solutions.

I hope to hear from you soon. Two-way communication is our goal here. I know that we deal with intelligent, experienced, and successful crazies like us every day and that there are many more of us out there. Drop me a line, tell me what you think about business, blogging, or whatever else is on your mind.

Happy Holidays and I hope to hear from you soon!
